CFPB Modifies Consumer Complaint System Transparency

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced on August 14, 2026, its intention to cease the discretionary publication of consumer complaint narratives and visualizations. This change follows a June 24, 2026, press release where the CFPB stated it is correcting flaws to restore integrity and utility to its consumer complaint system, noting previous issues that limited effectiveness [CFPB Newsroom].

FTC Issues Multiple Scam Warnings

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released several consumer alerts regarding prevalent scams. On August 24, 2026, the FTC warned veterans about postcard scams promoting a 'Veterans Savings Program' for benefits. Earlier, on August 13, 2026, an alert was issued for individuals struggling with tax debt, cautioning against dishonest companies promising to resolve debt for 'pennies on the dollar' without proper assessment [FTC Consumer Alerts].

Online consumers are also advised to be vigilant. An August 17, 2026, alert highlighted 'bill pay impersonators' using paid search ads to trick consumers searching for company payment sites. The FTC also noted on August 20, 2026, that unexpected packages could indicate a 'brushing scam,' where a scammer uses a consumer's name to leave fake reviews [FTC Consumer Alerts]. Furthermore, the FTC cautioned on August 10, 2026, that ads on social media are not vetted for scams, and on August 7, 2026, against investment training scams promoted on social media promising rapid wealth [FTC Consumer Alerts].

CFPB Activity on Data and Financial Education

Beyond complaint system adjustments, the CFPB continues its work on data transparency and financial education. On March 31, 2026, the bureau made the 2025 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data on mortgage lending available, contributing to fair lending and research [CFPB Newsroom]. Deputy Director Mark Paoletta also delivered remarks to the Financial Literacy and Education Commission on July 27, 2026, emphasizing ongoing efforts in financial education [CFPB Newsroom].
